Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a treatment method to cure uterine fibroids. An interventional radiologist specializes in the treatment of uterine fibroid through this method.

Uterine fibroid is the abnormal growth seen in the female uterus. These are common and 90% of uterine fibroids are benign(non-cancerous).they can be of different sizes ranging from the size of a pea to the size of small grapefruit. Symptoms of this condition can be heavy periods, pelvic pressure, bloating etc. patients who are symptomatic and want relief without undergoing a surgical procedure like hysterectomy, can opt for this procedure.

How is UFE performed?

UFE is performed by a specialist doctor known as an interventional radiologist. Dr Akhil with his vast experience and expertise is one of the best interventional radiologists in India.

In This treatment method, the doctor will insert a catheter into the artery through a nick in the groin or wrist region. The catheter when reaches up to the artery which is supplying blood to the fibroid, a medicine is released which blocks these. This cuts off the nutrient supply of the fibroid which shrinks.

Treatment options for uterine fibroids can vary from monitoring the fibroids to a hysterectomy. These treatment methods depend on the patient’s age, symptoms, and previous treatments undertaken by the patient. It also depends on the patient’s desire to have children or not.

What Are the Benefits of UFE?

  • It’s a minimally invasive treatment option for uterine fibroids
  • It preserves the uterus
  • Minimum pain and blood loss
  • Less postoperative complications
  • Faster recovery time
  • Same-day discharge
  • Resume your normal activities within a week.

When is UFE recommended?

UFE is recognized as a safe and effective treatment option for uterine fibroids according to The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). This treatment is typically recommended to a woman who is suffering from fibroids and shows symptoms. It is considered a good option for those who want to avoid surgical treatments of fibroids.

You should discuss this with your doctor before undergoing treatment whether UFE is a better option for you or not.

What should I expect following embolization?

Most patients are allowed to go home the same day after the procedure. You may experience little pain with cramping after the treatment. Some patients might have a  fever which is an occasional side effect of the UFE.

This treatment is effective for multiple fibroids and the chance of recurrence is less with this treatment.

Follow up is required after UFE.
